Our First Garden: Rooted in Curiosity and New Beginnings

Updated: May 23

This weekend, something beautiful happened—my husband and I officially became first-time gardeners! 🌿 We’ve dreamed of growing our own food and herbs for a while now, and this spring just felt like the right time to dig in, literally.

Neither of us has gardened before, so we’re starting this journey with beginner’s hearts, lots of curiosity, and the hope that the earth will meet us where we are. Together, we mapped out a space in our yard and filled it with plants chosen for flavor, healing, and a bit of magic too.

We planted three kinds of tomatoes in large pots—there’s just something so satisfying about sun-warmed tomatoes fresh from the vine. We tucked a single rosemary plant into its own pot too, where it can stretch out and fill the air with that grounding, woodsy scent I love so much.

In the earth itself, we planted lavender and spearmint—fragrant, beautiful, and oh-so-useful. I can already picture them waving gently in the breeze, waiting to be turned into teas, sleep sachets, or cooling summer infusions.

Our raised garden beds are where the heart of the action is. We planted:

  • Chives and candy onions for a little bite and zing,

  • Three kinds of peppers (I’m already dreaming of fresh salsa!),

  • Parsley, sage, and basil—herbs that feel like old friends and will find their way into teas, tinctures, dinners, and maybe even a few spell jars.

It’s amazing how much love and hope you can pour into such a small patch of earth. Each plant feels like a little intention—a prayer, really—for nourishment, health, creativity, and connection. We’re learning as we go, and that’s part of the magic. Some things might flourish, some may falter, but we’re in it together.

I’m most excited to see how this garden grows—not just in size, but in the stories it helps us create. When the time comes to harvest, I’ll be back here to share all the recipes we try—everything from pasta sauce simmered low and slow, to herbal salves and summer teas made from the plants we tended with our own hands. 🌸

We’re not done planting just yet! We’re hoping to add spinach and romaine lettuce to the garden soon, and maybe more as we go. Honestly, we’re still figuring it out—and that’s part of the adventure. I love that we don’t have to have it all perfectly planned. We’re letting this grow with us, organically and intuitively.

🌱 Let’s grow together!

I’d love to make this an interactive journey with my little online tribe.

This is so exciting! It's going to be so rewarding watching all your hard work grow into something you can grow and fill yourself with beautiful and colorful foods. I can't wait to try and build us raised garden beds when we move. To be able to be self sufficient in an amazing way!

It is exciting! Once we get closer to a harvest we will be looking for some sample recipes that we can edit and make it our own. I know you will love doing to garden and make it all your own. I want to get a little more self sufficient each and every year!
