A North Carolina Getaway & A Surprise Stop Up North

There’s something healing about stepping away from the usual rhythm of life and soaking in the sweetness of family and a change of scenery. This June, we took a trip to North Carolina to visit my husband’s family—and it was everything my heart didn’t realize it needed.
We stayed in a beautiful Airbnb nestled on High Rock Lake, sharing the space with his sister and her family. The house was peaceful and cozy, with a refreshing little pool that was just the right size for unwinding. There was even a hot tub, but with the summer heat, we happily skipped it and soaked up the sunshine instead.
One of the days, we didn’t go anywhere at all. We simply stayed at the Airbnb and let the day unfold without pressure. With soft conversations, relaxed meals, and the gentle presence of loved ones, it turned into one of my favorite days of the trip.
We spent time visiting his brother and family, where his mom lives, and one evening everyone came together for a cookout. There’s something so grounding about gathering with family—sharing stories, catching up, and simply being present together. No rushing, no fuss, just connection.
Monday evening gave us an unexpected little adventure. After going back and forth trying to decide what to eat, we finally settled on a place. When we arrived, we were shocked—it was located inside a gas station! We were definitely hesitant, but went in anyway. The restaurant, Mama C’s Mac-N-Smash, turned out to be an absolute hidden gem. I ordered a cheeseburger, and no exaggeration—it was the best I’ve ever had. If you ever find yourself near Lexington, North Carolina, do yourself a favor and stop in. Totally worth it.
We also made a point to visit the Old Salem Museums & Gardens. Walking the cobblestone streets, exploring the preserved buildings, and feeling the quiet charm of history around us was so grounding. Time seemed to slow down there, and I found myself deeply present.

One of the most unexpected little surprises was spotting an old-fashioned cigarette vending machine that had been restored to its original glory. It was fully functional—repurposed to sell small, creative items instead of cigarettes. I didn’t end up using it myself, but I thought it was such a clever nod to the past, blending nostalgia and artistry in a beautiful way.

Along the way, we made a spontaneous stop for a photo op at an old Shell gas station built in 1930. It’s no longer functional but has been preserved as a Historical Landmark, with its unique shell-shaped structure still standing proudly. It was such a fun, nostalgic moment—one of those roadside surprises that add a little sparkle to a trip.
Throughout the trip, I was soaking in every moment I could. I was so busy being in it that I didn’t take as many photos as I normally would—and occasionally, I feel a little upset with myself for that. But then I remember: I was there. Fully. And sometimes, that’s the memory that matters most.
As the vacation drew to a close, we had one more plan tucked quietly into our back pocket. We left North Carolina a day early—but didn’t tell our daughter. She had no idea we were heading north.
We traveled up to New York and stayed with my parents for the night. The next day, we drove a couple more hours to her going-away party. She, our son-in-law, and our grandchildren are preparing to move to Louisiana—he’s in the Army and will be PCSing there in July. When we walked in, they were completely shocked. The surprise went off perfectly, and it felt so good to be there for that moment. It was a joy I won’t soon forget.
This trip, with all its quiet lakeside moments, unexpected delights, and meaningful connections, reminded me of the simple magic of being present. Whether it’s in a pool with your people, over the best burger in a gas station, or showing up just when someone needs you most—it all matters.
